The celebration of western festivals

Assisted by globalization, western festivals have landed on China like flood, sweeping away Chinese people's passion to domestic festivals. It's no doubt that a majority of people in China now enjoy celebrating western festivals instead while having little interest in celebrating our traditional festivals. So, how does the situation happen?

To figure out the reason, we have to analyze the psychology of Chinese in celebrating western festivals. Conspicuously, western festivals, compared with Chinese traditional festivals, are more casual and have less limitation on behaviors. Feeling more relaxed and less stressed, they naturally prefer western festivals. Besides, what impresses those people is the experience which is totally different from the education we have ever received since childhood. The new joy really attracted a lot of people.

As for the influence of the situation, I think the harm it does is more than the advantages it brings. For one thing, celebrating western festivals can contribute to our knowledge about foreign culture and the culture communication of the countries. For another thing, people become ignorant of our traditional culture, which may die out if not protected well. What's worse, many people are not clear about the western festivals and they just create a mess. All in all, I think the situation has more cons than the pros.

(Halloween)

Festival is defined as a special occasion on which people may give thanks for a harvest, commemorate an honored person or event, pay respect to the dead, or celebrate a culture. Festival, as a cultural phenomenon, comes into being during the course of human development and historical evolution. Here, I would like to talk about some differences between the Chinese Spring Festival and the Western Christmas Day.

The Spring Festival is the most important holiday in China. The date for this annual celebration is determined by the lunar calendar, so the timing of the holiday (the 1st day of a lunar year) varies from late January to early February. On the New Year Eve, we would like to chat, watch TV, or even light the firecrackers with all the whole family. While the Christmas Day is celebrated range from December 24th to January 6th . However, on the December 24th , also known as the Christmas Eve, the western people usually choose to decorate a kind of evergreen tree with all kinds and colors of lights and gifts.

Although the means of celebration vary from one country to another, most people bear common feelings for the festivals, that is praying for happiness and health, fulfilling the good will, and showing the love of life. The New Year’s Eve is the last day of December in lunar year. At that night, all members in a family will get together to enjoy the ‘family reunion dinner’, implied meaning lucky and harmony. In the same way, western people value the reunion of the whole family. They have dinner together beside the Christmas tree and enjoy themselves in playing until late at night. It is worth mentioned that the most popular song during this period is ‘Jingle Bells’, praying for the gifts of Santa Claus.

Thirdly, the most difference between the Spring Festival and the Christmas Day is the traditional food, which also embodies their different values. In Chinese New Year, we usually have dumplings, noodles, New Year cakes, etc. Noodles symbolize longevity, while the New Year cakes pronounce ‘niangao’ in Chinese, which means that life will be better and better. Instead, on Christmas Day, western people usually to have a traditional Christmas dinner with turkey, roast goose, puddings, and fruit cookies, etc.

In the course of globalization, western culture has flooded into China at an almost non-stop rate. Along with it come western festivals, the most influential of which is Christmas. As a result of this “culture invasion”, more and more Chinese people, particularly the youth, are abandoning traditional Chinese festivals. There is even a prediction that the Spring Festival will ultimately be replaced by Christmas. However, personally I’m not in favor of this statement, as the Spring Festival is a kind of cultural heritage serving as a spiritual legacy for all of us to cling to, regardless of any hindrance.

First of all, observing Christmas does not mean that the Spring Festival can be neglected. The Spring Festival has its roots in Chinese history, from which it requires its identity and meaning irreplaceable by Christmas. As Christmas stemmed from Western civilization, it can’t easily fit in

with Chinese society, let alone take the place of the Spring Festival.{中西方节日一起过作文}.

Secondly, the Spring Festival expresses our true emotions while Christmas cannot. Often, the Spring Festival arouses a feeling of eternal harmony, creates a sense of happiness, and conveys a message of family. However, Christmas goes no further than one night’s pleasure or some fancy presents, which is surely to fade away with passing tide of time and memory.

The Spring Festival is not going to lose its vigor to Christmas, as it’s just like a warm beacon for all the Chinese to gather around to cheer, to dream and to carry on.

Should We Celebrate Western Festivals Nowadays, western festivals become more and more popular in China, especially among us college students. But whether we should celebrate these festivals has aroused a heated discussion.

Some regard it a precious opportunity for the Chinese to learn more about western cultures. On the other hand, more and more Chinese people view it oppositely. Since more and more young people have lost their interest in our traditional festivals, such as Mid-autumn Festival, Dragon-boat Festival, and even Spring Festival. They seem to be more willing to celebrate Christmas.

In my opinion, every coin has two sides. Since the globalization is

impossible to avoid this mix of cultures and traditions. We should preserve the traditional Chinese culture as well as welcome Western ones. We students undertake the responsibility to carry on our traditions, therefore, we have to respect them and cherish them.
