It was the last day of final examinations at a large college. On the steps of one building, a group of engineering students were discussing the exam that was about to begin. On their faces was confidence. This was their last exam before they graduated and found jobs.
Some talked of jobs they already had, others of jobs they would get. With four years of college study, they felt ready and able to conquer (征服) the world.
The coming exam, they knew, would be easy. The professor (教授) had said they could bring any books or notes they wanted, but they couldn't talk to each other during the test.
They walked into the classroom. The professor passed out the papers. The students' smiles became wide as they saw that there were only five questions on it.
Three hours passed and the exam came to an end. Then the professor began to collect the papers. The students no longer looked confident. They seemed worried. No one spoke as the professor faced the class with the papers in her hand. She looked at all the worried faces in front of her, and then asked, "How many students completed all five questions?" Not a hand was put up.
"How many of you answered four?" Still no hands.
"Three? Two?" The students moved restlessly in their seats.
"One, then." Certainly somebody finished one. But the class stayed silent. The professor put down the papers. "That is just what I expected, "she said.
"I just wanted to make sure you realize that even though you have studied engineering for four years, there are still many things about the subject you don't know. Instead of testing you on what you learned in this class, I've given you questions that skilled engineers face in the world outside the classroom. You can't expect to be an expert (专家) on the day you graduate. You have to learn as you go."
Then, smiling, she added, "You will all pass this course, but remember that your education has just begun.''
The years have weakened the name of the professor, but not the lessons he taught.

If you go to a fast food restaurant, you will probably see a lot of teenagers. Today, many teenagers are overweight, and some of this is because of their bad eating habits. Most teenagers love food with a lot of fat, oil, salt and sugar. People often call this kind of food “junk food”.
But bad eating habits go beyond fast food. We find many teenagers eat unhealthily. Some don’t have breakfast before they go to school. During the day, some don’t have a proper meal for lunch. In a recent survey conducted among 2,000 students at one school, scientists found that over two-thirds of the students didn't follow a healthy diet. They didn’t like vegetables, and many of them didn’t like to eat fruits. They preferred to eat food with a lot of salt, sugar or fat.
Parents today also worry about their children’s diet. Some doctors give the following advice: Teenagers shouldn’t eat too much junk food.
Teenagers shouldn’t eat food with too much salt. Salt can cause high blood pressure in the future.
Teenagers should eat food with less fat, oil and sugar.
Teenagers need to eat some fruits and vegetables every day. Fruits and vegetables are rich in vitamins and have little fat.

I woke up this morning. There is an empty feeling that I have had so many times before and it seems to be coming back into my mind. What is it? I can’t figure it out.
I got ready for work. On the way I decided to stop and get a cheese from the little shop just down the road. I have never been there before but I was hungry and it would be 5 hours before I got off work.
The owner of the store took my order. He asked me what I wanted and I told him I heard he made a great cheese. He seemed pleased to hear that.
As I was sitting in the small space there was an elderly man finishing his breakfast. He paid the waitress, received his change and made a small joke. As he returned to get up, but it was quite difficult for this man, he looked over at me. I gave a small smile.

I laughed and said thank you very much. He began to tell me a few one liner jokes so I smiled and laughed at his jokes.
He tried to get up to leave again and looked at me and said, “Your smile really brightens a room, do you know that? I said, “Thank you very much.”
He tried to get up, but it took him some time. As he got up he said, “Take care of that smile.” I felt a sense of comfort wash over me and I reflected (反省)on my morning and that empty feeling I had. For a moment in time it seemed to be filled.

If you won a lottery and had lots of money, what would you do? Most people would start by buying themselves things, such as a new car or a bigger TV. Some people even
decide to move a bigger house.
Many people who win lots of money may find that they have a lot of friends. The new friends they make may follow them for their money but they may also leave them when all money is spent. Sometimes people can’t decide what they want to do with all the money they have won, so they try to think of what they want. In the end, most people usually decide to save the money.
There are some lottery winners who decide to give up their jobs, because they think they have enough money and don’t need to work any longer. Some big lottery winners make even bigger changes—they end their marriages. They feel that they should be with a younger or more attractive man or woman but what they don’t know is that their new money is just a bit of luck. It can’t change everything. In Britain you’re allowed to drive a car when you’re seventeen. You have to get a special two-year driving license before you can start. When you’re leaning, someone with a full license always has to be in the car with you because you aren’t allowed to drive the car on the road alone. You don’t have to go to a driving school --- a friend can teach you. The person with you isn’t allowed to take money for the lesson unless he’s got a teacher’s license.
Before you’re allowed to have a full license, you have to take a driving test. You can take a test in your own car, but it has to be fit for the road. In the test you have to drive round for about half an hour and then answer a few questions. If you don’t pass the test, you’re allowed to take it again a few weeks later if you want to. In 1970 a woman passed her fortieth test after 212 driving lessons! When you’ve passed your test, you don’t have to take it again, and you’re allowed to go on driving as long as you like. Britain’s oldest driver was a man who drove in 1974 at the age of 100.
Before 1904 everyone was allowed to drive, even children. Then from 1904 car drivers had to have a license. But they didn’t have to take a test until 1935. On the early days of car driving, before 1878, cars weren’t allowed to go faster than four miles an hour and someone had to lead the car with a red flag. ( )9.
