a book review

a book review Wu Zetian is a book written by Feng Xuemin that is about the whole life of Wu Zetian who is not the first but also the unique female empire in tang dynasty. This book restores the real appearance of wu,but not the fustigation that historians make.

In my opinion, this book can be divided into three parts. The first part is mainly about the time when wu is born to the time before she go to the palace. She is very clever when she was a child and at that time she has the consciousness of equality between men and women. After her father’death, she and her family are faced with many difficulties, which helps her develop a tough character.

The second part is about how she becomes an empress.Wu Zetian enters the Tang palace at 13 and then she becomes a concubine of Emperor Taizong.Unfortunately, after Taizong’s death in 649, she might have been expected to spend the rest of her life as a Buddhist nun, like his other childless concubines. However, through an unlikely fortuity—that Empress Wang, the wife and empress of Emperor Taizong's son and successor Emperor Gaozong, wanted another beautiful concubine to divert Emperor Gaozong's favors from Consort Xiao, bringing her back to the palace.because of the fierce struggle, both Empress Wang and Consort Xiao were killed, and she was made empress.

The last part is about wu’s efforts to people’benefits, for which she finally gets support from people and her husband.People have to say that she is a good empire and does a pretty good job,due to sophisticated social and traditional contradictions. However,to our surprise , when she was dead she finally gives her throne to her son who is obviously a successor of her husband and changes back to tang dynasty as well.

Personally,Wu Zetian is really a wonderful woman in China’s history.Nevertheless, because she is a woman, which means that the powers of the men are persecuted, many ministers don’t agree her. But,No one can deny what she has done for Tang Dynasty.

book review

As the title implies, this book seeks to set out the principal features of photosynthetic carbon assimilation in C3 and C4 species and in those which exhibit Crassulacean Acid Metabolism (CAM).The purpose of this book is to describe photosynthetic carbon assimilation as it now stands.

The book constitutes 16 chapters:1.intrduction,2.energy and laws,3.energy and light,4.the photochemical apparatus and its function,5.the formation of ATP, the generation of assimilatory power,6.the reductive pentose phosphate pathway and associated reactions,7.introduction,8.plastids and intracellular transport,9.the regulation of photosynthetic carbon assimilation, 10.discovery of the C4 pathway,11.three C4 subgroups: biochemistry , photochemistry and taxonomy,12.integration of functions in C4 photosynthesis,13.photorespiation,14. primary carboxylases and environmental regulation of photosynthesis and transpiration,15.crassulacean acid metabolism. And consists of three sections: 1.events, 2. explanation, 3.dicussion. 337 pages are devoted to the section 2-explanation, which covers 8 chapters.

Section 1 includes a concise and elementary description of the photochemical apparatus and the photochemical events which lead to the generation of assimilatory power (ATP+NADPH)[ Chapter 1-5].

Section 2 goes on to the consider the most important aspects of photosynthetic carbon assimilation including a number of topic which have only been elucidated in the last decade and are therefore inadequately covered in many contemporary texts

[ALLAMAY W. G.(1973)]. For example the chapters devoted to C3 photosynthesis not only consider the essential features of the reductive pentose phosphate pathway but also aspects of its regulation, and its relationship to the movement of metabolites between the chloroplast and its cellular environment (chapter 6-9) [WILLMER (1977)]. In addition photorespiration (chapter 13-14) is covered in some detail. Similarly the treatment of C4 photosynthesis , which is , in any case ,a relative “new” topic includes sections on the formulation and function of the pathway[Hock-Hin Yeoh,(1980)], the compartmentation and regulation of enzymes ,metabolite transport ,photochemical requirement, taxonomic diversification and physiological implication(Chapter 10-12)[ U.CHAKRABORTY,(1993)].

Section 3 focuses on discussion. Chapter 15 discusses the discovery of Crassulacean Acid Metabolism (CAM), and its biochemical and ecological aspects. Chapter 16 covers photosynthesis in reproductive tissue and the diversity of malate metabolism in plants.

General information on techniques of chloroplast isolation is provided (Appendix A) and enzyme nomenclature is given for enzymes in C3,C4 and Crassulacean Acid Metabolism (Appendix B) .References are often listed at the end of a subsection and specific citations are generally avoided within the text. Reviews are cited which will allow the student to go readily into greater depth in specific areas.

I would recommend this book highly to university students and graduates at all levels as an useful professional book.

the Age of Innocence

If you want to know better about the late nineteenth-century New York society, you can’t miss this excellent piece of work. World-widely regarded as one of the woman author’s greatest achievements, the book vividly portrait the struggle between the individual and the community, and the contradiction between passion and duty. It also explores the liberties of change as a society, from conservative culture to one that is less formal and affords its member greater freedom.

The central character Newland Archer has been raised into a society where manners and morals rules are strictly followed by individuals. Gossiping can be heard everywhere, and members of the society strive to uphold their reputations above everything. Under this background the marriage between Archer and May ought to be a well-matched one in both social and economic status. However, Archer’s world is thrown upside down by the arrival of May’s cousin Countess Ellen. Recently departing from her husband in Europe, Ellen shocks the conservative New York society with her revealing clothes, carefree manners. Besides, she is seriously surrounded by bad rumors and rejected by the New York upper-class circle. However, the more Archer comes to know better about her fresh living style, the more bored he gets towards his wife May. Compared with her cousin, she seems to be a manufactured product of her class: polite, innocent but no self opinion and no change for anything fresh.{bookreview范文}.

He can’t resist the temptation and make use of every possible opportunity to approach Ellen. A strong passion of love arises between them, but both of them know their duty for their own family and foresee the fruitless future of their love. In order to maintain family reputation, they had to surrender to subconscious social awareness. After May’s announcement of pregnancy, Ellen returns to Europe to break away from Archer.

After 25 years of separation, Archer’s memory about Ellen fades into a faint and illusion image. He is successful in his career and has become authority of the whole city. ‘But he knew he had missed something: the flower of life.’(Quoted from the book) At the same time, the city also sees a great change: reforms and movements exist everywhere old traditional restrictions are discarded by the younger generation. At that time, Archer has three children and after the death of May. His son arranges a visit to Ellen in Paris. At the last minute, Archer chooses to live with his memories of the past instead of seeing Ellen.

One of the central themes to the book is the conflict between individual and society. Ellen leads quite a colorful and she never considers to harm anyone, but everyone in the society despises her because her difference with others. It seems the only way an individual can be accepted into the community is to sacrifice one’s own freedom and compromise to the restriction of family reputation. In chapter 18, Ellen wishes to claim her freedom by divorcing her husband, but Archer is sent by the family to discourage her from the action because family fears unpleasant gossip. The painful ending of Archer and Ellen’s love is also largely based on their fear of hurting family status.

Another theme of the book is the existence of hypocrisy in the upper-class circle. New York society values correct appearances more than reality. Marriage becomes a ritual and recognition for status. May and Archer know that Ellen doesn’t come to the ball where their engagement is announced because she wants to avoid bringing shame on the family, but May pretends, even to the man she will marry, that it’s because she lacks a suitable dress.

There’s a sharp contrast between old society and new society. At the end of the book the old society with its rigid conventions is challenged by the arrival of a new age. Archer’s children have the right to pursue their own happiness without considering family scandals. His eldest son Dallas marries Fanny Beaufort whose parents used to be the biggest scandal in the society. However, nobody pays enough attention to the beautiful young lady’s family background, they don’t have to sacrifice their own happiness to avoid family condemn.

When I first see the title of the book, I’m fascinated by this purified description. In the contents of the book, it has many meanings. It advocates a doubt about decay lurking beneath the surface of this glided age. Archer’s wife May is brought up to remain innocent of the corruption that surrounds her. Archer is innocent in believing a love affair with Ellen could escape from the tiresome society but actually it’s no more than a common act of adultery. On a larger scale, old New York itself is an innocent society, which can’t tolerate anything different. In that sense, the title is a little ironic.

In 1921, the book achieved a double distinction- it won the Pulitzer Prize and it was the first time this award had been won by a female author. It has become a masterpiece of contemporary American literature.

A Game of Thrones-bookreview

Book Review of A Game of Thrones

A Game of Thrones is the first book in A Song of Ice and Fireseries by American Author George R. R. Martin. It waspublished in 1996, won the 1997 Locus Award(1997 Award Winners & Nominees, 1997),and was nominated for both the 1997 Nebula Award[1] and the 1997 World Fantasy Award(1997 Award Winners & Nominees, 1997).

It is a great masterpiece. Martin created a new fantasy world with a variety of magicalelements including dragons, monster races called the Others and evenabnormal seasons that winter or summer can last for tens of years. The story starts on the land called Westeros and tella cruel political conflictamong the greed Queen Cersei Lannister together with her son who tried to rule the Seven Kingdom, the Starks who were willing to protect the King’s Iron Thrones and the Targaryens who wanted to recapture their lands. The title comes from Queen Cersei’s quotes on page 471: "When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die. There is no middle ground."(A Game of Thrones, 2013)

In the book, what extremely amaze readers was how real the fictive world was, and I attribute it to the author’s excellent writing skills on plot building and character development(Contrarian, 2013).

Martin told the story by following three principal storylines simultaneously(A Game of Thrones, 2013), in the Seven Kingdoms, on the Wall and in the East. Skipping among storylines cut the story into several splendid plots. The story is filled with suspensebecause it is hard for readers to followall the information or details at once. However, at the end of the book, when the three storylines which seem separated before intersected, all the haze fade away. Additionally, the story was told from multiple POVs (Point of View)(A Game of Thrones Book Review, 2011). Every chapter was told by one of the main characters (8 in total). This method of telling stories add reality by putting readers into the plots and on the positions of characters in the book so that readers could imagine themselves as the roles and totally comprehendcharacters’ mind, choices and actions. The following part is taken as an example.

“The ground was so far below him he could barely make it out through the grey mists that whirled around him, but he could feel how fast he was falling, and he knew what was waiting for him down here. Even in dreams, you could not fall forever. He would wake up in the instant before he hit the ground, he knew. You always woke up in the instant before you hit the ground. The ground was closer now, still far far away, a thousand miles away, but closer than it had been. It was cold here in the darkness. There was no sun, no stars, only the ground below coming up to smash him, and the grey mists. He wanted to cry”(Martin, 1996)

This paragraph was whatBran, Eddard’s little 7-year-child, thought while he was falling from a high tower.Reading the sentences, I felt like I was falling with Bran. The fear, the loneliness, the hopelessness, all these negative emotion came to me when the ground got closer and closer. There are a number of similar paragraphs in the book, greatly increased the reality and attraction.

It is more brilliant that by fiercely contrast between different characters’ point of view, readers could thoroughly seize roles’ trails and personality. Eddard Stark, Warden of the North and Lord of Winterfell, impressed the readers as a faithful, straight and clemency gentleman. He is a considerate husband to his wife, a loving father to his children and a merciful lord to inhabitants on his land and men under his hands. As the Hand of the King, when the King died and the greedy Queen attempt to usurp the throne,Eddard gave up the chance that detaining the Queen and her brother before they could act(A Game of Thrones, 2013). He refused to use his household guardsmen to take control of the throne during the King’s Died Night because of his loyalty to his friend, King Robert. He could not bear to do anything beyond his authority or harmful to the Kingdom andas a result, he was arrested and executed. Eddard’s death extremely shocked readers and his faith and loyalty were extruded while contrasted with the Queen’s greed and evil.

Martin’s book is not only a fantasy fiction but also a reflection of the real world. The core of the book are humanity and reality. All the characters symbolize real people and all plot’s development follow real regulation. It is the reality of the fiction that attract amount of readers from all over the world to read the book.

I think talking about hobbies is better than talking about lucky money. It is easy and interesting. Everyone has his own hobby, like playing ball games, listening to music, drawing and so on. It can bring us pleasure and make us relaxed. We have a lot to say when we talk about it.

Lucky money, however, isn’t a proper topic for us, because it’s too personal. What’s more, not all of us can get lucky money. Some may feel unhappy if we talk about it.

So talking about hobbies is really a good choice.

呼啸山庄英文读后感bookreview on wuthing heights

Wuthering Heights is a , and the only by . First published in 1847 under the Ellis Bell, a posthumous second edition was edited by her sister .

The name of the novel comes from the manor on the on which the story centers (as an adjective, is a Yorkshire word referring to turbulent weather). The narrative tells the tale of the all-encompassing and passionate, yet thwarted, love between and , and how this unresolved passion eventually destroys them and many around them.

Now considered a classic of , Wuthering Heights met with mixed reviews by critics when it first appeared, mainly because of the narrative's stark depiction of mental and physical cruelty. Though Charlotte Brontë's was initially considered the best of the ' works, many subsequent critics of Wuthering Heights argued that its originality and achievement made it superior. Wuthering Heights has also given rise to many adaptations and inspired works, including , , television dramatisations, a by , , , and (notably the hit "").

The novel is narrated by Mr. Lockwood, who also takes a subsidiary role in the action. His housekeeper, Nelly Dean, provides a secondary narrative that is embedded within Lockwood's.

Lockwood relates his arrival in the year 1801 at Thrushcross Grange, a grand house on the that he is renting from Heathcliff, also the master of nearby Wuthering Heights. Visiting the Heights to greet his landlord, Lockwood is treated rudely and coldly by its inhabitants, whose hostile relationships with one another he does not understand. Snowed in, he is forced to stay overnight, and, unable to sleep, reads the diary of a girl named Catherine Earnshaw, learning that she was a close childhood friend of Heathcliff. Later, he has a terrifying dream in which the ghost of a young girl appears at his window and begs to be let in. As he struggles to keep her out of his room, Heathcliff is awakened by Lockwood's shouts and enters. Upon hearing of

Catherine's ghost, he asks Lockwood to leave the room. Standing outside the door, Lockwood hears Heathcliff sobbing and calling for 'Cathy' to come in.

The next morning, after returning to Thrushcross Grange, Lockwood asks the housekeeper,

Nelly Dean, to tell the story of Heathcliff, Catherine, and Wuthering Heights. She takes over the narration and begins her story thirty years earlier, when Heathcliff, a "gypsy" from the streets of Liverpool, is brought to Wuthering Heights by the then-owner, Mr. Earnshaw, and raised as his own. Both Earnshaw children, Catherine and Hindley, initially resent Heathcliff, however

Catherine and Heathcliff swiftly become inseparable. Her brother Hindley continues to hate and physically abuse him, seeing him as an interloper and rival for his father's attention. When Mr. Earnshaw dies three years later, Hindley, by this time married to a woman named Frances, inherits the estate. He brutalises Heathcliff, forcing him to work as a hired hand. Catherine becomes

friends with the neighbouring Linton family who live at Thrushcross Grange, and they mellow her wild personality. She is attracted to the refined, mild, and young Edgar Linton, whom Heathcliff takes an immediate dislike to.

A year later, Frances dies from "" shortly after giving birth to a son, Hareton. Hindley takes to drinking and becomes dangerous, at one point dropping the baby Hareton from the stairs where he is rescued by Heathcliff. Some two years later, Catherine informs Nelly that she wishes to marry Edgar Linton, as it will give her status and allow her to protect Heathcliff from her brother. Nelly disapproves of Catherine's attraction to only Edgar's physical person and status. Heathcliff overhears the conversation at Catherine's explanation that it would be

"degrading" to marry him and leaves Wuthering Heights, before hearing Catherine profess her love for him. After realizing Heathcliff has left her, Catherine becomes desperate and is struck down by a fever. When she is moved to Thrushcross Grange so that the Lintons may care for her, Mr. and Mrs. Linton contract the fever and die. Edgar's attentions slowly return Catherine back to health, and some years later she marries him. She lives in apparent happiness for a few months, until Heathcliff returns, apparently transformed into a wealthy, respectable gentleman. Through loans he has made to the wayward Hindley that cannot be repaid, Heathcliff takes ownership of Wuthering Heights upon Hindley's death. Intent on ruining Edgar, Heathcliff elopes with Edgar's sister Isabella when he learns of her attraction to him. When they marry and return to Wuthering Heights, Edgar disowns his sister and she is abused by Heathcliff.

Catherine is initially ecstatic at seeing Heathcliff again, but then becomes very ill after a harsh argument with Heathcliff regarding Isabella. They reconcile a few hours before her death,

however, reaffirming their feelings for one another. Catherine dies after giving birth to a daughter also named Catherine, or Cathy. With no male heir, the Linton estate passes to Catherine.

Heathcliff becomes more bitter and vengeful towards those around him. Isabella flees her abusive marriage a month later and subsequently gives birth to a boy, Linton Heathcliff. At around the same time, Hindley dies. Heathcliff takes ownership of Wuthering Heights and vows to raise Hindley's son Hareton with as much neglect as he had suffered at Hindley's hands years earlier. Heathcliff chooses to ignore paternal emotions (he identifies with Hareton's plight) so that he might continue to degrade Hareton as Hindley degraded him, thereby achieving his revenge.

Twelve years later, the dying Isabella asks Edgar to raise her and Heathcliff's son, Linton. However, Heathcliff finds out about this and takes the sickly, spoiled child to Wuthering Heights. Heathcliff has nothing but contempt for his son, but delights in the idea of him ruling the property of his enemies. Cathy, accompanied by Nelly, and Linton, accompanied by Hareton, meet while Cathy is riding on the moors. Linton treats Hareton, who is , with equal disrespect and contempt as his father does, believing Hareton to be an imbecile. Nelly is appalled by the state of Hareton, remembering him as a bright, loving toddler. Cathy feels sorry for Linton, who knows his father despises him and is utterly miserable. Heathcliff uses his son to issue Cathy invitations to Wuthering Heights, but Edgar senses a trap and refuses to let Cathy go. Cathy's nature is much sweeter than her mother's and she reluctantly obeys her father. But when she receives news that Linton has fallen ill, she refuses to stay at home and hurries to Wuthering Heights to see if she can be of help. Heathcliff attempts to persuade her to marry Linton. With Linton's health diminishing swiftly, he puts Cathy under house arrest and forces the two to marry. Soon after, Edgar Linton dies, followed shortly by Linton Heathcliff. This leaves Cathy a widow and a virtual prisoner at Wuthering Heights, as Heathcliff has gained complete control of both Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange. It is at this point in the narrative that Lockwood arrives, renting Thrushcross Grange from Heathcliff, and hears Nelly Dean's story. Shocked, Lockwood leaves for London.

During Lockwood's absence, events, described to him by Nelly upon returning, reach a

climax; Cathy gradually softens toward her rough, uneducated cousin Hareton, just as her mother was tender towards Heathcliff. She teaches him to read and he allows her to open up again after becoming so bitter from Heathcliff's brutal treatment. When Heathcliff is confronted by Cathy and

Hareton's love, notably Hareton's determination to protect the defiant Cathy from Heathcliff's attacks, he seems to suffer a mental breakdown and begins to see Catherine's ghost. He seemingly abandons his life-long vendetta and dies, having "swallowed nothing for four days". Nelly

describes finding Heathcliff's corpse as lying on the bed, stiff with , with the window open and rain pouring in through it, soaking Heathcliff's body. Only Hareton mourns Heathcliff's death. He is buried, according to his wishes, next to Catherine in the graveyard, with Edgar's grave on the other side of Catherine's.
