I am very glad to share my topic with you. Then today I'd like to talk something about courage.

Courage is not something that comes from flying to your heart in moments of need or in emergencies. Courage is not something that can be handed over to you through lessons either.

Courage is a way of life. It is as much a habit as anything else. Like getting up and brushing your teeth in the morning, or drinking coffee.

It’s a matter of routine more than anything else. People tend to speak of courage only in terms of deeds. For instance, they might speak of courage in the battlefield. Soldiers and policemen are supposed to show courage. Or they might refer to courage in the face of devastation. Flood-affected people or earthquake victims must show courage.

However, courage is not merely the name you can give to your putting up with a bad situation. After all, in a bad situation, there is not much one can do expect cope with whatever strength and forbearance you can muster.

The real test of courage is in our daily lives. Or should be.

The courage to speak the truth.All the time. Because lies are the biggest and most obvious sort of cowardice that all of us hide behind.

The courage to speak our mind and not stay silent, simply because we are afraid that other people might not agree with us. Of course, there will be conflicting views. And of course, conflict is unpleasant. But not speaking your mind can lead to much worse unpleasantness.

The courage to stand up for what we believe in.The courage to follow public rules and laws and insist that other people follow them too.

The courage to resist those who take easy ways out, which only leads to more corruption and red tape in our social systems.

Mark Twain has said, Courage is not the absence of fear. It is acting in spite of it. The sign of a courageous person, then, is someone who is feels, fear, recognizes fear and still goes on to do what he or she believes is right.

It's my great honor to be standing here to give you a speech. Thank you for your coming!

Today, I want to talk about what we cannot afford to lose. I believe all of you will have your own ideas when asked the questioned. Your answers may be health, wealth, success and so on. However, in my opinion, courage is what we cannot afford to lose.

Ok, now, I want to ask you a question. When it comes to courage, how will you describe it? In other word, how do you understand courage?(yes, different people have different view on courage. In your eyes, courage means...)

As far as I am concerned, courage is the cornerstone of success. Many times, we failed just because of lacking courage. Because we didn't have the courage to take our first step, we must have courage.

Now, I want to ask you several questions.

Do you think singing a in public need courage?

Do you think talking with a foreigner need courage?

Do you think attending an interview need courage?

Yes, doing everything needs courage. Let's just take today's contest. Actually, many people may have interest in it, but why only we are standing here? Because those people lack courage while we have. Seen

from it , we are the bravest. To give us the beat encouragement, why not give ourselves the greatest applause. (Thank you!) Maybe we won't win the contest today, but we still succeed because we come.

Thirdly, courage is like an engine which provides us with the motivation to proceed. As we all know, in the path of success, there are full of difficulties. We will come across the moment when we will doubt ourselves and want to give up. At this moment, the courage will be the voice that tells us to ignore these problems and go ahead. We can obtain endless power from it and get closer to success.

Therefore, I think what we cannot afford to lose is our courage. Whenever we come across difficulties, do not fear or escape, just take courage to fight with them. Who we should defeat is nobody but ourselves. As long as we have the courage to take our first step, we are not far from the success. Thank you!

Your work is going to fill a large part of your life and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. You’re going to have some ups and you’re goning to have some downs. Most people give up on themselves easily. You know the human spirit is powerful?! There is nothing as powerful. But behind every principle is a promise. And some of you in your life, the reason why you not at your goal right now, because of your just all about you feelings. All on your feelings, you don’t feel like waking up, so who does? Everyday you say “no” to your dreams, you might be pushing your dreams back a whole six months, a whole year! That one single day, that one day you didn’t get up could have pushed your stuff back, I don’t know how long.

Don’t allow your emotions to control you. We are emotional, but what you want to begin to discipline your emotion. If you don’t discipline and contain your emotion, they will use you. You want it, and you are going to go all out to have it. It’s not going to be easy, when you want to change. It’s not easy. If it were in fact easy, everybody would do it. But if you’re serious, you’ll go all out.

I’m in control here. I’m not going to let this get me down; I’m not going to let this destroy me. I’m coming back! And I’ll be stronger and better because of it! You have got to make a declaration, that this is what you stand for! You’re standing up for your dreams; you’re standing up for peace of mind, you standing up for health. Take full responsibility for your life! Accept where you are and the responsibility that you’re going to take yourself where you want to go. You can decide that I am going to live each day as if it were my last! Live your life with passion! With some drive! Decided that your change to push yourself. The last chapter to your life has not been written yet, and it doesn’t matter about what happened yesterday. It doesn’t matter about what happened to you, what matter is: what are you going to do about it?

This year I would make before this goal become a real. I won’t talk about it anymore. I can, I can, I can!

To persevere I think is important for everybody, don’t give up, don’t give in. There’s always an answer to everything.

Honorable judges and dear friends, I am delighted to be with you all here, giving my speech on this very special occasion, the year before the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

How did mankind start to reach a civilized state? It goes back to the moment people discovered fire. It is said that Prometheus stole fire from Zeus and gave it to

humankind. He also gave them wisdom and warmth at the same time. Therefore, fire has become a symbol of heat, health, and hope, and it represents passion, power and pride. Today, that fire has become a torch in my hand, bringing me courage, cleverness, and confidence.

With the Olympic torch in my hand, the Olympic spirit stays in my heart. Faster, higher, stronger, just as the Olympic Motto says, we are trying to surpass ourselves in the very essence of our very beings. I imagine all the girls here have had an

experience of running the 1200 meters in their P.E. classes. So have I. Once, I was at the starting line, getting ready for a race. I really had a strong desire of victory. I tried my hardest to run faster and faster. As my strides slowed down I began to lose my breath. At that very moment, I thought of world beating Chinese Olympians gritting their teeth. They pushed themselves beyond their limits, and tried to achieve gold for their motherland. With all my strength I pulled myself up and headed straight for the finishing line. Exhausted all the way, I powered all the way until I reached the

finishing line. My warm blood and beating heart felt like the flame of the torch’s heat running through my veins. The torch inspires me to be the best I can be in all that I do.

With the Olympic torch in my hand, I am facing all of you, requesting you to feel the warmth which the flame brings us, to feel the spirit which the torch impacts to us. Ladies and gentlemen, it is time for us to hold the torches, joining the relay team; it is time for us to make ourselves better, in body and in soul; it is time for us to go to the stage, surprising and exciting the whole world.

It is a time when, as the Olympic flame is carried and passed from the runner’s torch to the large flame of the Olympics, it will shine a light onto China’s past, present, and future, the world’s past, present, and future.

Good afternoon, honorable judges, dear teachers and my fellow schoolmates!

Standing here with a torch in my hand, I really appreciate this opportunity to share my feelings with all of you. The title of my speech today is “Olympic Torch in My Hands”.

Standing here with this great Olympic torch, I see myself holding the Olympic spirit. Stepping off the Olympia, the athletes try their best to participate, to compete, and to conquer. They come a long way. They focus on the process rather than the outcome. They try to compete and see themselves in their rivals. Thus they compete to conquer – their rivals and themselves under the Olympic flame. That’s why all the

athletes deserve medals, concretely or virtually as all this reflects the best the Olympic Motto – “ Faster, Higher, Stronger”

Standing here with this great Olympic torch, I once again fall in deep pondering. It went back to a month ago. As I was walking on the hallway, I met Miss Xie and was told that I could get the very chance to compete in this competition. With a

moment of silence, I said nothing but heard so many mes talking inside myself. “It’s a good chance!” “Well, what if you cannot win?” “You are going to rock!” “No, you might prove to be a loser” It’s a real challenge and I was freaking out. When asked, I simply answered, “ I have got so much stress!” But I know clearly I once had an idea of running away from it and hiding because I didn’t see myself strong enough to take the competition. When told that only six out of hundreds of girls in the grade could have the chance to compete, I hesitantly took this precious chance. All of my friends and classmates were placing great expectation on me. Upon learning this, they encourage me, pointing out that being given this chance has already proved my

achievement in the past two years and half and now I should only do the best I could and forget about what was once bothering me. Going deeper with the true meaning of the Olympic torch, I find myself getting closer to the Olympic spirit. Care less about what one could win, but more about what one could gain. Conquer the

respectable rivals is to conquer oneself. After a long time preparing, I am standing here with the fellow contestants. I no longer worry about “ifs”, for once I am here, I am fulfilling the spirit of Olympic games. Now I am ready to compete, to confront. Without the competition, I won’t know the significance of challenging myself. Without the confrontation, I won’t be higher, faster or stronger.

Standing here with this great Olympic torch, I would like to end my speech with a short poem.

You are my adversary

but you are not my enemy

For your resistance gives me strength

your will gives me courage

your spirit ennobles me. And though I aim to defeat you

should I succeed I will not humiliate you

I am happy to be with you today, to show my expectation and excitement of the coming Beijing Olympic Games. As a Chinese, I absolutely look forward to the

Olympic Games in 2008 and also strongly support our Chinese team! And as a young student, I often join the sport activities to improve my sport skills. Apart from that, I

always pay lots of attention to the sports news and dream of being a great athlete to make contributions to China.

I used to imagine that I had an Olympic torch in my hand, but I haven’t told anyone before. I think holding an Olympic torch in my hand is a kind of pride. And now, I luckily have the opportunity and bravery to tell you what I would do if so.

I would like to take my Olympic torch to Zeus Hieron in Olympia, the home of the Olympic flame, to thank the Gods and Goddesses for giving us the holy spirit of Olympic Games.

I would like to take my Olympic torch to all the other countries, to show its beautiful flame to all the foreigners. Like the flame shining brightly and warmly, our hospitality will be great to welcome people from all over the world.

And I would like to take my Olympic torch to the West Lake, to the Yellow Mountain, to the Great Wall, to every important symbol in China, even to every place in China! So that all the people in China will gather together to pass the flame, pass the torch, to get the Olympic spirit, higher, faster, stronger! And also mix the Chinese traditional culture into the holy flame, to express our enthusiasm to the Olympic Games.

Besides those, let every Olympic torch in every one’s hand throughout the world, shine from every village and every hamlet, from every province and every city. Then the sportsmanship will be everywhere, and the Olympic spirit will be in every one’s brain!

I do have those incredible thoughts though I am still a young boy. And I will keep my eyes on sports and hold the Olympic torch tightly all the time to worship and spread the holy Olympic spirit. At last, strongly hope that the Beijing Olympic Games will be held successfully. Thanks.

I’m sure that all of us here had the same excitement when Samaranch announced that Beijing was going to hold the 29th Olympic Games in 2008. Being a Chinese, the

Olympic flame was burning at that unforgettable moment with a strong desire in our hearts to light the seeds of Olympic spirit.

In my opinion, once the Olympic torch is enkindled, the flame which symbolizes the spirit will never burn out. The Olympic motto, “swifter, higher, stronger” is not only for athletes but also for all the people of different nationalities or occupations in the world who are trying to make a breakthrough.

What has supported and built this motto? That is “Confidence, strength, self-respect”. This reminds me the success, which I have experienced in the sport meeting the year before last. Before the race, I felt upset, asking myself, will I be able to do that? While I felt lack of confidence and strength, the struggle experience about the Belgian tennis player Justine Henin came to my mind.

After an 8-month-combat against the injury, early this year, Henin came back. But her fate cheated her again. She was compelled by illness to abstain from halfway.

Anyway, she didn’t despair. Instead, she practiced much harder until she made up for her once fault with the gold medal in Olympics to prove that she was not a coward. At that moment, the Olympic torch was burning strongly. My heart was filled with vehement passion. During the race, between continuing and discontinuing, I

determined to continue. After the exciting result had been announced, although I was really exhausted, I had had my fill of pleasure.

What has made both of us have such a powerful force to overcome so many

difficulties? That is the burning torch in our hearts. The Olympic spirit has deeply inspired us and also millions of people with an Olympic torch in their hands.

Keep an Olympic torch in our hands, in order to overcome the obstacle and never fear losing until you are successful, that is the desire in the hearts of the powerful. Although the Olympic Games are momentary, the enlightenment, which Olympics bring us, will last eternally. The victory or defeat in competitions is temporary, but the Olympic spirit of strengthening self without stopping is everlasting.
