Staying by a Stump Waiting for More Hares To Come and Dash Themselves Against It

This story took place more than 2,000 years ago. At that time there was a man who was famous for staying by a stump waiting for more hares to come and dash themselves against it.

He was a yong farmer, and his family had been farmers for generations.Year after year and generation after generation, farmers used to sow in spring and harvest in autumn, beginning to work at sunrise and retiring at sunset. In good harvest years, they could only have enough food to eat and enough clothing to wear.If there was a famine due to crop failure, they had to go hungry.

This young farmer wanted to improve his life. But he was too lazy and too cowardly.Being lazy and cowardly over everything,he often dreamed of having unexpected blessings.

A miracle took place at last. One day in late autumn, when he was ploughing in the field, two groups of people were hunting nearby. As shoutings were rising one after another, scared hares were running desperately.Suddenly,a blind hare dashed itself headlong against the stump of a dead tree in his field and died.

That day,he ate his fill.

From that day on,he no longer went in for farming again. From morning till night,he stayed by that miraculous stump, waiting for miracles to take place again. Staying by a Stump Waiting for More Hares To Come and Dash Themselves Against It

The Death of Qū Yuán 屈原

On the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, the day of the dragon boat festival (Duānwǔ jié 端午节), people eat zòngzi 粽子 (although people also eat them at other times, since they are delicious). The association of zòngzi with this occasion is said to be in memory of the poet QŪ Yuán 屈原, an official of the state of Chǔ 楚 during the Warring States Period (period 04e, 200s and 300s BC). The famous warring states included Yān 燕, Qí 齐, Zhào 赵, Wèi 魏, Hán 韩, Chǔ 楚, And Qín 秦, as well as the diminutive Wèi 卫, Dōngzhōu 东周, Sòng 宋, and Lǔ 鲁 (where Confucius lived). Among all these, the state of Qín was by far the most powerful and sought to dominate or absorb the others. (Eventually it succeeded. That’s where the Qín dynasty came from.)

Qū Yuán was a scion of an aristocratic family and a trusted counselor at the court of king Huái, 怀), where he was an advocate of close alliances with the other states in the hope of frustrating Qín’s expansionist ambitions. But he was hated by an envious competitor for the king's attention. In the late 280s BC the state of Qín 秦 broke its alliance with Chǔ, and many battles ensued. eventually Qín suggested that the Chǔ monarch go to Qín for peace talks. Qū Yuán counseled against doing so, for he did not trust Qín. But king Huái's son Qǐng Xiāng 楚顷襄 argued in favor of the trip, and king Huái went.

As Qū Yuán had predicted, king Huái was arrested, held in exile in Qín for three years, and finally executed. Meanwhile his son Qǐng Xiāng became monarch, and selected Qū Yuán's old enemy as his prime minister, who immediately persuaded him to have Qū Yuán banished. He moved to his old home in what is today northern Húběi 湖北 and spent his time collecting folklore and writing poetry.

In 278 BC Qín forces, under the command of the famous general BÁI Qǐ 白起, occupied Yǐng 郢, the Chǔ capital (in modern Jiānglíng county 江陵县 in Húběi).

Qū Yuán was in despair both at the injustice of his exile and at the loss of his homeland to the Qín conquerors because his advice had not been followed. He commemorated his sorrow in a long poem still widely respected, called "Leaving the Tumult" or “The Sorrow of Leaving” (Lǐsāo 离骚) (usually translated “Encountering Sorrow”) and in many other melancholy poems, often including the word lament (āi 哀) in the title, such as "Lament for [the Fall of] Yǐng" (Āi Yǐng 哀郢).

Eventually on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, overcome by his depression, Qū Yuán committed suicide by jumping into the nearby Mìluó river

People were unable to find his body, and made sacrifices to his spirit by throwing rice into the river. Later, fearing that the rice would be too readily eaten by fish, they tied the rice into wrappings of bamboo leaves. (Other accounts say that the wrapped rice was thrown in to feed the fish and thus prevent them from eating Qū Yuán's body.)

Although people do not throw rice into rivers any more, the custom of preparing and eating rice wrapped in bamboo leaves (zòngzi 粽子) is still associated with the fifth day of the fifth month.

一个英文写成的中国传统神话故事,关于中国四条江的形成long, long ago, rain stopped falling in china. the people prayed for rain to the jade emperor, for it was he who looked after everything in heaven, on the land and in the sea, but no matter how much they prayed, rain did not fall.

four dragons lived in the east china sea in those days. they swam to shore to see what was happening, and saw people tearing grass from the caked ground, for the people had nothing else left to eat.

we must do something, long dragon said, and yellow dragon nodded. we must help them ourselves, said pearl dragon, for the jade emperor will never answer their prayers.{中国英文故事}.

they suddenly thought of a way to help. they started swimming this way and that, scooping up water with their bodies. then all four leapt into the sky. black dragon flew to the north, long dragon flew to the west, pearl dragon flew to the southernmost tip of china, and yellow dragon flew to the very center of the vast country. all at once, they let the water fall from their mouths, arms, legs, and even their tails.

the people down below looked up, but they could not see the dragons. they could only see the rain falling from the sky -- drops of rain more beautiful than any jewel. rain! they cried joyfully, and all the people and animals ran out into the rain and started to dance.

when the jade emperor saw the rain, he was furious. who dares to tamper with[干预] my world? he shouted, and then saw the four dragons swooping around in the sky. you will not escape! he thundered, and summoning[招集] mountain god, he ordered him to kill the dragons.

mountain god sent four mountains tumbling after the dragons. the moment the creatures landed, the four mountains landed on top of them, crushing them. then an odd thing happened. suddenly four rivers formed, springing out from beneath the mountains and spreading across the whole country.

this, people say, is how the four great rivers of china were created: the yangtze, the yellow, the pearl and the heilongjiang are all that remain of the four great dragons who once saved the people of china.

When I was out for a travel in Jeju Island, what surprised me most are those Chinese features all around this prestigious scenic spot of Korea. The moment I got out of the plane, I was amused by those broken Chinese words printed on the wall of the airport. Most of those hilarious words say “currency exchange!” or “greatest hotel room ever! ” and “Duty free shops” in a pretty funny way. I guess Chinese people are, like, walking cash to them. Anyway, although those who wrote them clearly are not even close to good Chinese speakers, they had indeed made my travel phenomenally convenient as well as homelike at the same time. There is even a whole district called JUNGMUN, which means “Chinese” in Korean. It is one of the most bustling places in Jeju, as tourists from China basically bought the whole place up. I could even spend RMB in Jeju, which is usually not allowed in other religious or countries. Chinese tourists have indeed promoted the economics there, I guess.

Another interesting phenomenon I’d like to talk about is the Chinese feature in US TV series. As you all know, US TV series play a rather important part in Chinese students’ lives. Agents of SHIELD is a well-known series and I personally love it very much. When an agent came back, half-dead, saying “I have spent my last four years in a ShanXi cooper mine”, I couldn’t help laughing. And I don’t have to mention the Chinese food Saturday of Sheldon in The Big bang theory, the mysterious girlfriend named Shadow of Oliver Queen in The Arrow, and those meaningless quoting of Confucius and Sun Zi in countless US TV series. American writers seem to see Chinatown as a sacred and exotic place in which live insidious villains who happen to master kung fu and have serious Asian faces.

These phenomena above are just a small part of Chinese features overseas I have noticed. Needless to say, the rise of China has indeed became more and more relevant and significant to the ordinary Chinese people. There most certainly is not any other country in this world that has changed its international standing at this magnitude, and the world is embracing China in an unprecedented way.

However , although we have seen the progress made by the world, I’m still hoping that they can see through the surface to perceive the essence of China. What we should really focus on are every individual of the 1.3 billion ordinary Chinese. We should change the viewpoint and take a serious look at China, at Chinese people, at their down-to-earth dreams, at their impulsive drive to change their fate, to change their nation's fate, and at their kindhearted temperaments, at their diligent characters. Today's China is made up of Chinese people who have virtue and excellence, not just of Bruce Lee and Kung pao chicken cubes. We should not overlook this great country, and we most certainly should not see only the high-rise buildings and the apparent prosperity, but also lay our sights on those unsung heroes who have been making contributions to this very society since the beginning.

Harmony of

Humoun and Nature

〖Zhuangzhou Dreamed a Butterfly〗

One day at sunset,Zhuangzi dozed off and dreamed that he turned into a butterfly. He flapped his wings and made sure enough he was a butterfly. He had such a joyful feel-ing as he fluttered about that he completely forgot that he was Zhuangzi.Soon though,he realized that proud butterfly was really Zhuangzi who dreamed he was a butterfly.Or was it a butterfly who dreamed he was Zhuangzi?

Maybe Zhuangzi was the butterfly, and maybe the butterfly was Zhungzi? This is what is meant by the“transformation of things.”

〖A Fond Dream of Nanke〗

In the Tang Dynasty, there lived a person called Chun Yufen. One day,his friends came to celebrate his birthday, and Chun Yufen was drinking under an old pagoda tree. When he became drunk,he fell asleep.Suddenly,Chun Yufen met with two atomies who took him into a giant hole in the tree, having a ride to the great Kingdom of Pagoda.Chun Yufen found himself in a fairy world with many red gates, magnificent palaces, luxuriant pavilions and beautiful gardens.

The king appreciated him very much so that he was named the mayor of Nanke,a small town in the Kingdom.Soon after,he married the king’s beautiful daughter.Chun Yufen was so happy with the life there that he totally forgot his hometown.Twenty years passed, and Chun Yufen stayed as the very successful mayor of Nanke and raised a big family of five sons and two daughters.

However, the kingdom was invaded by another country and Chun Yufen had to lead the troops to hold out the enemies.Unfortunately, his troops were defeated and his wifedied.Chun Yufen decided to leave the Kingdom of Pagoda. He was sent home by the 2 atomies. As soon as he arrived home,he woke up to realize what had happened was just a dream. It was only a short nap, even though in his dream he had experienced a whole 20 years of life.

Chun Yufen’s friends were interested in his dream. They looked down the tree and found an ant nest connected to a smaller nest in the south direction.Obviously, these nests explained what

“Pagoda Kingdom”and“Nanke”really were!

〖The Penumbras and the Shadow〗

The penumbras asked the shadow,“A moment ago you were looking down and now you are looking up;a moment ago your hair was tied up and now it is hanging loose;a moment ago you were sitting and now you are standing;a moment ago you were walking and now you are standing still. How is all this?”

The shadow said,“Gentlemen, why do you bother asking me such trifling ques-tions?I do these things but I don’t know why.Am I like the shell of a cicada or am I like the slough of a snake?I look like the real thing, but I am not the real thing.I appear with the flame or the sun,but fade with the shade or the night.

Do I depend on the real thing? But the real thing itself has to depend on something else!when the real thing comes,I come with it; when the real thing goes,I go with it; when the real thing moves to and fro,I move to and fro with it.What is there to ask about?”

〖Lips Gone,Teeth Cold〗

The King of Jin was going to attack Guo,a state on the other side of Jin’s neighbor country Yu.The Jin troops had to have Yu’s permission to go through its territory, which, most likely, the King of Yu would refuse. The King of Jin could not work out a plan. One day,Xun Xi,one of his ministers, put forward a suggestion,“Your Majesty,if you send your most precious gifts to the King of Yu,he will probably be bribed into giv-ing consent.”

The King of Jin looked reluctant,so Xun Xi said,“Even if he accepts the gifts,it doesn’t mean that he possesses them,as they will soon be taken back by us.Then what is there to be worried about?”Thus the King of Jin took up his plan.

The King of Yu agreed at once as soon as he saw the gifts。But Gong Zhiqi,a minis-ter of

Yu,took objection to it,saying,“Guo is our neighbor country, our reliable friend, and the relationship between us is just like that between lips and teeth. As an old saying goes,‘when the lips are gone, the teeth will feel cold’,so will our country be in danger when Guo is conquered. If we let the Jin troops pass, the gap between Guo's destruction and ours is only a period of morning to evening.”But Gong’s advice was rejected. What happened thereafter just proved what Gong had said.

〖Perfectly Impartial〗

King Jin Pinggong once asked his minister Qi Huangyang,“I am going to appoint a magistrate and send him to govern Nanyang County.Who do you think will fit the of-fice?” Qi answered without hesitation,“Xie Hu may be the choice.”

The King feit surprised and said,“Isn’t Xie Hu your personal enemy?”

“Yes,”Qi replied,“but Your Majesty, you ask me who will fit the post, not who is my enemy.”

So Xie Hu took office, and he did do a lot of good things for common people in:Nanyang County.

Some time later when the King inquired who could take command of the army,Qi responded readily,“Qi Wu is most suited.”

The King was puzzled again, said,“Well,I wonder if Qi Wu is your son.”

“Yes,he is,”Qi answered,“but what has that to do with the point at this issue? Your Majesty, you just ask who is competent as a general, and I aired my opinion.”

So Qi Wu was appointed a general, which later proved one of the wisest appoint-ments. Hearing about this,Confucius spoke highly of Qi for his recommendation in consid-eration of one’s virtue and talent, brushing aside any thought of whether one was his en-emy or relative. He said that it was really perfectly impartial.

〖Every Word Counts〗

During the Warring States Period, the troops of the State of Qin surrounded Han Dan city, the

capital of the State of Zhao, and the situation was very critical. So the King of Zhao sent Lord Ping Yuan to the State of Chu for help.Lord Ping Yuan intended to lead twenty assistants to accomplish this mission.Nineteen qualified people were select-ed,and one more was needed. At this time,Mao Sui volunteered to forward a plea to go with Lord Ping Yuan.Although Lord Ping Yuan was dubious about his capability,he still asked Mao Sui to go with them in the end.

As soon as Lord Ping Yuan arrived in the State of Chu,he started to lobby for Chu’s support, but made no progress.Accordingly,Mao Sui said to the King of Chu,“We come here to ask you to send relief forces, but you did not utter a word. Please don’t for-get,although you are stronger than us,you have lost many battles and even your capital. From my point of view, uniting Zhao against Qin is more urgent for you.”Mao Sui’s comments made the King of Chu State sincerely convinced, and promised to send refief forces immediately.

After Lord Ping Yuan came back to the State of Zhao,he said with emotion:“Mao Sui’s words are more important than nine huge tripods.”

〖A Sigh of River〗
