美国人(American)用餐一般不在精美细致上下功夫,而更讲究效率和方便,所以近年来方便食品日益增多,除去最常见的三明治(sandwich)、汉堡包(hamburger)和热狗(hot dog)外,市场上还有速溶咖啡(coffee)、速饮桔汁、速食面包(bread)、速食糕点(cake)以及快熟面、罐头汤、电视餐等,hamburger和hot dog是街头巷尾出售的大众化食品。hamburger中通常有牛排(steak)和洋葱(onion),吃起来方便可口,深受人们欢迎。至于hot dog的问世,其中还有一段有趣的插曲。传说的发明者是德国移民安东·弗奇特万根。1904年,他在圣路易斯开了一家饭铺,出售牛肉(beef)、香肠(sausage)等。因为他买不起那么多副银制刀叉(knife and fork),只好把手套(gloves)发给顾客,让大家用手拿着香肠吃。不久,他发现这个办法行不通,常有人吃完饭后“顺手牵羊”,把手套也带走了。而且洗手套既费事,费用又高。弗奇特万根最后想出一条妙计:他把sausage夹在一种细长的面包里出售,不但方便,而且好吃,很快便博得大众喜爱而畅销各地。由于这种食物形似酷暑里伸着舌头的狗(dog),所以人们称它为“hot dog”。
Sandwich是用两片面包涂上黄油(butter)或者蛋黄酱、芥末、番茄酱,中间再夹一层乳酪(cheese)或各种熟肉做成。三明治种类很多,比较受欢迎的有火腿三明治和烤牛肉三明治等。西红柿(tomato)和泡菜(pickle)常夹在三明治里或和三明治一起吃。
所谓电视餐,是用有格的铝盒盛上汤(soup)、主菜(main course)、蔬菜(vegetables)及甜食。平时冷冻收藏,用餐时,放入烤箱烘烤二三分钟即可。饭后盒子可扔掉,简单方便,可边吃边看电视,故称“电视餐”。近年来备受美国主妇欢迎哦。
