这里所说的中心，就是记叙文的中心思想，也有人称为主题或主旨。写文章时确立中心思想的过程就叫做“立意”。记叙文的中心思想，是指通过记人、叙事、写景、状物所表现出来的对生活的主要看法，或赞成、或反对、或歌颂、或批评。在一篇记叙文中，确立中心思想是很重要的。清朝作家姚鼎说过：“诗文美者，命意必善。”中心思想是文章的灵魂，中心思想确立得好，写出文章才能有神。

记叙文的中心思想必须做到鲜明和集中。鲜明，指文章的褒贬必须明确，不能含含糊糊；集中，指要将所有的材料有机地组织起来，表现一个中心思想。

萧乾先生的《枣核》一文。这篇短文写了一位海外的旧时同窗托付作者从家乡带几颗生枣核的故事。文中写了这位同窗住宅中的种种景物：垂柳、睡莲、假山石、凉亭、白塔，以及他对家乡枣树的怀念、托带枣核的用意。这一切都是为了表现一个中心，即海外华人的思乡之情。文章很短，却非常感人。

杨朔的《荔枝蜜》写了作者对蜜蜂的思想感情上的变化：从小时候见到蜜蜂的“疙疙瘩瘩，总不怎么舒服”；到喝了荔枝蜜后“动了情，想去看看一向不大喜欢的蜜蜂”；再到听老梁介绍蜜蜂的习性后对蜜蜂的赞叹；直到文末“梦见自己变成一只小蜜蜂”。这一系列的描述和渲染，都是为了突出一个中心——赞美蜜蜂“对人无所求，给人的却是极好的东西”的高尚品质，并通过这一赞美，歌颂了像蜜蜂一样默默无闻做奉献的劳动者。 从以上的例子我们可以看出，文章的光彩首先在于要有发光的思想。一篇感人的记叙文在思想见解上总要有过人之处，也就是“立意”要立得好。有的同学写作文时，往往没有认真考虑中心思想就忙于动笔，结果写出的文章纵然有千言万语，却缺乏明确的中心，这是文章失败的主要原因。 一篇好的记叙文的中心思想除了要鲜明、集中之外，还要做到新颖深刻。文章，特别是考生的作文，最忌千篇一律。这样的作文，容易使阅卷的人感到乏味，甚至于厌倦，是不会得到太高的分数的。反之，如果在“一律千篇”之中突现出一篇立意新颖深刻的文章，其他方面即使是上等水平，也会得到优良的成绩的。
