听说法(The Audio-Lingual or the Aural-Oral Method)
听说法的特点,概括起来,有以下几点:
1听说领先。根据语言学的观点,认为语言首先是有声的。学习外语不论其目的是什么, 都必须先学听和说,在听和说的基础上才能有效地学习读和写。教学的顺序应当是先听说、 后读写。
2以句型为中心。根据句子在结构上的特点,从无数句子中归纳出一定数量的句子模式或 基本类型,即句型。句型既是语言教学的基础,也是整个外语教学的中心。无论是语言材料 的安排,还是语言技能的培养,都要围绕句型这个中心进行。在教学中要让学生通过反复操 练,达到自动化地运用每一个句型。
3对比语言结构,确定教学难点。主张外语教学必须把外语和母语进行对比,找出它们在 结构上相同和相异的地方,以确定外语教学的难点。在这个基础上有针对性地编写出适合本 国学生学习的教材。教学时把重点放在攻克难点上。
4反复实践,形成习惯。认为语言习惯习得的过程犹如动物的行为一样,是一种刺激—— 反应的过程。学习外语同学习母语一样,要靠大量的练习和反复实践,养成一套新的习惯。 语言知识和理解能力在这里起不了多大的作用。
5及时纠正错误,培养正确的语言习惯。根据刺激——反应学说,学生从学习外语的第一 天起,无论是学习语音、词汇或句型,都要求学生理解得确切,模仿得准确,表达得正确, 不放过任何性质的错误。一旦发现错误,及时纠正,以便使学生养成正确运用外语的习惯。 否则,错误一旦形成,就难以纠正。
6尽量不用母语。结构主义语言学家认为各种语言是不同的,一种语言的词义很难用另一 种语言的词确切地表达出来。因此,他们主张用直观手段、情境、借助上下文和所学外语直 接释义。尽量不用母语,只有在不得已的情况下可以把翻译当作释义和理解的手段。 7广泛利用电化教学手段,特别是语言实验室。
听说法的教学过程一般有五个阶段:
1认识(recognition)教师通过直观手段或上下文、情景等手段向学生发出语言信号(主 要是句型),表明语言信号所表达的意思,让学生把信号和它所表示的意思联系起来,即“听 音会意”
2模仿(imitation)让学生通过仿说—纠错—再仿说,同时记忆。
3重复(repetition)让学生重现通过模仿已经记住的语言材料,作各种记忆性练习,一直 到能正确理解和背诵为止。
4变换(variation)为了培养学生活用语言的能力,作各种不同的变换句子结构的练习。 如,替换(substitution)、转换(con-version)、扩展(expansion)等操练活动。
5选择(selection)让学生从已学的语言材料中选用某些词汇、成语和句型,描述特定的 场面或事件。即综合运用,进一步培养学生把学过的语言材料运用于实践的能力。 一般认为听说法有以下一些优点:
1强调外语教学的实践性,要求熟练地掌握句型,有利于外语语言习惯的养成。
2重视听说训练,使学生在学习外语的初级阶段,在有限的材料范围内就能流利地听说外 语。
3容易学到比较自然的外语语音、语调。
4在对比语言结构的基础上找出难点,有针对性地编写教材,有利于学生学习和掌握外语。 听说法的缺点是:
1过于重视机械训练,不利于学生实际掌握外语。有些学生能把句型背得滚瓜烂熟,但在 交际场合不会运用,或用得不恰当,甚至出错。
2过于重视训练语言的形式,忽视语言的内容和意义,学的语言很不自然。在教学中往往 造成学生能自动化地说出一个完整的句子,却不一定了解其意义。
教学方法机械、单调,容易使学生产生厌倦情绪。

产生时间,背景
听说法于20世纪40年代在美国产生.第二次世界大战爆发后,美国军队为在短期内培养大批掌握外语口语能力的军人,采取一系列的措施和手段强化训练士兵的听说能力,听说法便应运而生.战后,该法被推广应用到学校外语教学中,并在20世纪五六十年代风行美国和西方各国.
理论基础
①语言学理论基础是美国结构主义语言学,该法强调第二语言教学要从口语开始,从说话开始,通过掌握语言结构学会目的语言.代表人物有:布龙菲尔德( L. Bloomfield),弗里斯( C. Fries)。结构语言学家认为,语言学的任务就是严格地按照科学原则去观察和描写人类的语言,并弄清楚这些语言在结构上的特征。他们认为语言首先是说的话( speech),所有的人在学会阅读之前都是先学会说话的,文字是话语的表现形式。[1]
②心理学基础是行为主义心理学的刺激---反应论.认为言语行为是通过刺激与反应的联结并加以强化而形成习惯,强调第二语言教学要通过大量的模仿和反复操练养成新的语言习惯. 教学过程
美国布朗大学特瓦德尔教授在1958年把听说法的教学过程归纳为认知,模仿,重复,变换,选择五个阶段.
二、基本原则编
听说法的基本原则表现在以下7个方面.
⑴听说领先.注重口语,听说领先,听说是一切言语活动的基础.口语是第一位的,读写是在听说的基础上派生出来的;初级阶段先练口语,以培养口语能力为主,读写为辅. ⑵反复操练,用模仿,重复,记忆的方法去反复实践,形成自动化的习惯.
⑶以句型为中心.句型是语言教学的基础,也是外语教学的中心,通过句型操练能自动化地运用每一个句型,掌握目的语.
⑷排斥或限制使用母语和翻译,尽量用直观手段或借助于情景,语境,直接用目的语理解和表达.
⑸对比语言结构,确定教学难点,把外语教学的主要力量放在攻克难点上.语言结构对比包括母语同目的语结构的对比分析和目的语结构内部的对比分析.
⑹能及时,严格地纠正学习者出现的错误,培养正确的语言习惯.
⑺广泛利用现代化教学技术手段,如幻灯,录音,电影,电视等,通过多种途径进行强化刺激.
三、相关评价
1.优点:
以口语为中心,以培养听说能力为主;
强调句型的训练,创造了一套通过句型操练进行听说读写的基本训练方法;
限制使用母语但不排斥母语的作用;
通过母语和外语对比确立教学重点和难点;
运用现代化视听手段进行教学.
2. 缺点:
强调听说,忽视读写;
听说是枯燥的机械性操作,句型操练脱离语境,不利于培养创造性地运用语言的交际能力.
四、历史意义
在第二语言教学史上,听说法是一种理论基础非常雄厚的教学法流派,它把结构主义理论和行为主义理论应用到外语教学中,使外语教学建立在当代科学研究成果的基础之上,具有划时代的意义.听说法的出现成为第二语言教学法发展史上的一个里程碑,在理论和实践两个方面都促进了第二语言教学法的发展.《英语九百句》就是一套按照听说法理论编写的比较有名的学习英语口语的教材,曾一度在中国的英语学习中产生过较大的影响.
