I strongly agree with the statement that young people nowadays do not give enough time to helping their communities.
First of all, as we all know, all young people are facing pressure from all aspects. So they actually do not have time to spend on helping their communities. In our country, a student should study extremely hard to become outstanding because he has to meet a exam named "Gaokao" when he graduated from high school. The score of this exam can decide which university the student can be admitted. For preparing this exam, a student should take his all time on reviewing. If he gives time to helping his community, it will waste his time on study and this activity can distract him. In addition, for being more outstanding, young people have to spend a lot time on study other skills such as painting and playing a kind of instrument. They have to go to a particular training center to improve their skills. It is obvious that the main reason of why young people do not give enough time to helping their communities is they want to put more time on improving themselves.
Secondly, young people nowadays are a little selfish. Most of young people in our country do not have brothers or sisters. So they are used to be cared and helped. They don't know the meaning of help. So young people would like to play computer in home rather than help others. And they are lazy. Although they know helping communities can help them from being lazy, they will also choose staying in home because they think helping communities is hard.
Admittedly, helping communities is a good chance to develop responsibility. What more, with this experience, young people can always be proud. However, the reality indeed doesn’t allow young people to pay enough time to helping communities.
It has been a fact that young people nowadays do not give enough time to helping their communities. The only way to change this fact is reduce their pressure and instill them the advantage of helping communities.

The writer responded with a well-organized and developed essay. Use of English is clear and idiomatic. Elaboration of ideas or connection of ideas is strong. The passage could be readily emulated. 正文:
Taking into account the fact that the young people spent most of time on study or work, I agree that some young people nowadays fail to spare enough time for community service. But due to the policy of some high schools and
universities that students are required to serve the community, the improved community is attributed to the efforts of some young people.
To begin with, for some university students, the community service gives way to the study.University students have to work hard enough in a bid to guarantee high GPA which would benefit them in the long run if they decide to pursue further education or lucrative career.Take medical students for example. Overwhelmed by subjects ranging from basic biomedical science to molecular immunology, students have to deal with assignments and laboratory reports following the courses. Obviously, they invest more time on solving academic problems than on addressing community issues.
Secondly, for some young employees, community service gives way to the work. On one hand, the work schedule is tight for staffs at their twenties. Chances are high that they are required to work for additional hours partly because young people are at the disposal of the superordinate. On the other hand, some young employees give priority to earning money so as to feed themselves and parents. In this case, the burden of feeding the whole family drives them to be preoccupied with work rather than the community service. As a result, the more time they spend handling the paperwork or answering the telephone at the company, the less time they spend refurbishing the neighbor’s house or clearing up the streets at the community.
However, some young people indeed help their communities because a number of high schools and universities
mandate that young undergraduates should be engaged in community service during each winter or summer vacation. In some high schools, for example, one of requirement for receiving a diploma is that students must fulfill two hundred hours of community service. Besides, many colleges make community service an unofficial requirement for admission. For this reason, young people are able to play different roles in building a better community and conferring benefits to residents by writing newsletters, organizing art events or working at local clinics.
To sum up, although I concede that some students are committed to community service due to the policy of the school, there are some factors, I think, holding young people back from devoting sufficient time to helping their communities.
点评:

In 1938 an archaeologist in Iraq acquired a set of clay jars that had been excavated two years earlier by villagers
constructing a railroad line. The vessel was about 2,200 years old. Each clay jay contained a copper cylinder surrounding an iron rod. The archaeologist proposed that vessel were ancient electric batteries and even
demonstrated that they can produce a small electric current when filled with some liquids. However, it is not likely that the vessels were actually used as electric batteries in ancient times.
First of all, if the vessels were used as batteries, they would probably have been attached to some electricity
conductors such as metal wires. But there is no evidence that any metal wires were located near the vessels. All that has been excavated are the vessels themselves.
Second, the copper cylinders inside the jars look exactly like copper cylinders discovered in the ruins of Seleucia, an ancient city located nearby. We know that the copper cylinders from Seleucia were used for holding scrolls of sacred texts, not for generating electricity. Since the cylinders found with the jars have the same shape, it is very likely they were used for holding scrolls as well. That no scrolls were found inside the jars can be explained by the fact that the scrolls simply disintegrated over the centuries.
Finally, what could ancient people have done with the electricity that the vessels were supposed to have generated? They had no devices that replied on electricity. As batteries, the vessels would have been completely useless to them.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement?
Young people nowadays do not give enough time to helping their communities. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.
Young people nowadays are credited more than they can handle, both as the future of the world and the benchmark of social morals. They are overwhelmed by huge expectations to engage in numerous tasks from their parents and the society as a whole, therefore time is almost never enough for them. Helping the communities, among all the things, is no exception.
Objectively, time is indeed far from sufficient for youth to engage in this kind of activities. From the primary school children to the working population, it is the learning and working that justifies their full time, especially in countries that prioritizes academic improvement. This is an idea that is instilled in their mind and ingrained with each passing day. Teachers in school and parents at home constantly give them an impression that an outstanding performance outweighs anything else and only in excelling others in academic study can they embrace a bright future and promising career. No wonder the importance of study dies hard and naturally other activities, ranging from helping the lonely aged to cleaning the road, are considered a distraction from their major task.
At a deeper level, the concept or awareness of devotion may be lacking in the young’s mind. Brought up and considered as the prince or princess of their family, young people have already taken it for granted that contribution, either to their little family or the community, is not a necessity in their life and immerse in their individual world. This is partly because the parents misinterpret it in a way that children can get whatever they demand without consideration of others, let alone some return to the world they live in. Also in part the education system and the society plays no favorable role in molding a contributing atmosphere. In advocating and focusing on intellectual development and material success, they are actually conveying a perception that academic development and working achievement are the golden rule and destination. Then the innocent young, experiencing the strong criticism from the outside, still have to carry on with the heavy working burden.
In contrast, the societies that put community service in a high position can witness the giving young people active participating in various activities for the needed. The society, in turn, can feel the warmheartedness and enthusiasm. Obama is a typical example, he repeatedly referred to his experience of serving his community and attributed his growth to the service in his first presidential campaign. This won him many votes and somehow reflects how much importance Americans attach to the community contribution. Additionally, community service is a requirement for applying for universities, pushing and encouraging the students to get involved. In conclusion, young people may not be so multi-tasking, but they are not the only one who are responsible for the insufficient contribution. The solution lies with the cooperation of the parents and the whole society, creating a sound atmosphere and raising their awareness from the very beginning.

The reading passage explores the issue of whether clay jars those found in Iraq villagers are the ancient electric batteries. The professor’s lecture deals with the same issue. However ,he thinks that these vessels were used as electric batteries in ancient times , which contradicts what the reading states. And in the lecture ,he uses three specific points to support his idea.
First , even though the reading passage suggests that there are no necessarily electricity conductors such as metal wires located near the vessels .the
professor argues in the lecture that it may some conductors material near the vessels . This is because these vessels had been found by local people , not the archaeologist , which means villagers may found some conductors material but have not gave them to the archaeologist. Obviously ,the professor’s argument disproves it is counterpart in the reading.
Moreover , despite the statement in the reading that the copper cylinders inside the jars look exactly like copper cylinders discovered in the ruins of
Seleucia ,however it used for holding scrolls of sacred texts , not for generating electricity. The professor contends that although the copper cylinders inside the jars look alike ,they have different purpose. Then he supports this point with that fact that the vessels original used in holding scrolls ,then they found that they can be use to get electricity . In other words , it can be the ancient battery. Finally , the professor asserts that the battery had some purpose in ancient time. Whereas the author of the reading claims that there were no
electricity advice in the ancient, so ancient people does not need a battery. The professor proves that this claim is indefensible by pointing out that it can be used to show magic power or cure people like modern medical.
In conclusion , the professor clearly identifies the weaknesses in the reading passage and convincingly shows that the central argument in the reading the vessels were actually used as electric batteries in ancient times is incorrect

You reading says that these vessels were not used as batteries in ancient times, but the arguments used in the reading are not convincing. The battery explanation could very well be correct.
First, about the absence of wires or other conductors. Remember, vessels were discovered by local people, not archaeologist. There people might have found other material located near the jars. But since they were not trained archaeologists, they many not have recognized the importance of that material. So materials serving as wires or conductors might have been overlooked as uninteresting or even thrown away. We'll never know.
Second, it is true that the copper cylinders in the vessels are similar to the cylinders used to hold scrolls, but that does nor really prove anything. It's possible that the copper cylinders were originally designed to preserve scrolls. And that some ancient inventor later discovered that if you use them together with iron rods and some liquid in a clay vessel, they will produce electricity. That's how the first ancient battery could have been born. In other words, the copper cylinders could have been originally used for one purpose, but then adapted for another purpose.
Finally, there's the question of the possible uses the battery in the ancient world. Well the battery could produce a mild shock or tingling sensation when someone touched it. This could very well have been interpreted as evidence of some invisible power. You can easily see how people could convince others that they had magical power through the use of the battery. Also the battery could have been used for healing. Modern medicine used mild eletric current to stimulate mussels and relieve aches and pains. Ancient doctors may have used the batteries for the same purpose.
The reading passage explores the function of ancient vessels, and the professor's lecture is also about the same topic. Whereas, she contends that the arguments in reading are not convincing and the vessels could be utilized as battery in old ages, which conflict with reading's content. And in the speech, the professor uses three compelling reasons to support her position.
First, the absence of metal wire mentioned in reading cannot be tenable proof. In the lecture, the professor claims that the vessels were discovered by local villagers, not archaeologists, when they excavated those ancient products, they had no awareness of careful observations. Therefore, those wires might be neglected and threw away, which
means electric wires are supposed to exist before the discovery even though they were not found after experts came to the fields, which disproves its counterpart in reading passages.
Second, even though it is true that the copper cylinders are look similar like Seleucia's, the professor asserts that it cannot be the evidence to identify the function of those later vessels. The early vessels might be served as book scrolls at the beginning, but later some inventors realized the addition of iron and liquid can produce electricity, which means the original function was adopted by later generation, and this part is obviously overlooked by reading passage.
Third, the professor states that electricity could be useful for ancestors which weakens the argument made in reading. She points out that ancient people can use battery to prove the magic invisible power. The electric battery can produce slight current which could cause mind shock after people touched. Moreover, it can be the healing tool as well. When people feel painful, the shock of battery could release the feeling of ache.
To sum up, the professor clearly pinpoints the weaknesses in the reading passages, and convincingly shows that the central argument in the reading, i.e., the function of vessel is not as electric battery, is specious.
