2.1 What is important when aiming to improve career prospects

When aiming to improve career prospects, I would take four factors into account, namely, a good reading habit, a good command of foreign languages, a further education and organic frame of the world (先列出四论点).

To start with, a good reading habit can enrich your knowledge. When you are reading business articles, the latest business events will give you a clue of what to do on your own opinions.

Secondly, foreign language learning is becoming increasingly(有意识的替换more and more) popular in companies because it guarantees effective communication with overseas business partners. Thirdly, further education helps you to step forward. With more training, your proficiency will be improved. Last but not least, an organic knowledge system also plays an important part in the career development. A broadened horizon(开阔眼界) would enhance your professional skills.

2.2 What is important when deciding how to transport goods?

When you are deciding how to transport goods, the destination of the delivery is the prime element to be considered(这也是表明观点的一种表达方式哦).

For the sake of (为了~~) convenience(论点1), various means of transportation should be adopted with regard to different distance of the delivery. Furthermore, we can not overlook speed(论点2). A more prompt delivery means a faster turnover(此处意为流通量,注意它的其他两种意思:营业额及 turnover rate员工的离职率).

On the other hand, delivery and loading of the goods should not be neglected(论点3). If the goods are not taken care of, there could be damages either in transit or during the loading and unloading process or by other reasons. If the percentage of the damaged portion is too high and the goods are in a bad condition, the company can suffer from a huge loss. And now it comes to the last point: price(论点4). Other things being equal, as long as the transport company can handle the items properly(可以用专业术语“野蛮装卸”rough handling表示), we would definitely choose the one that grants us the best offer.

2.3 What is important when purchasing new machinery?

When purchasing new machinery for production line(生产线), the level of automation should be considered first(论点1). Just imagine how much labor it will save if the whole process is computerized and fully automatic, that is exactly the reason why we buy new machineries: to save labor and raise efficiency.

Moreover, we should be aware of the maintenance requirement (论点2) of the machineries we bought. It should be stated crystal clear(完全明白,十分明了) in the payment terms(专业术语:付款条件,支付条款) whether it is the responsibility of the buyer or the seller to get the maintenance covered(意为“负责”).

Furthermore, quality should be viewed before the purchase(论点3).

Finally, if I were in charge of the purchase, my interest will be towards safety(论点4). The visual of some worker getting caught in the blade(刀片)of the machinery is horrifying. If we don’t take this seriously, this image will not be a hypothetical case(噩梦

3.1 what is important when selecting a retail sales assistant?

When selecting a retail sales assistant, several factors should be taken into consideration. Firstly, I think if the candidate has some previous experiences (论点1), he or she may get a priority or privilege(优先权,特权) for the position, because as many other employers, I attach great importance to it for that matter.

Secondly, I would pay attention to the personal appearances (论点2) of the applicants. A good appearance can make the publicity of the company better and easier, and the clients and customers will have deep impression of a decent, neatly dressed sales assistant.

Thirdly, some basic skills and qualities are necessary, such as communication skills and analysis skills (论点3). And also, to keep contact with our customers is very important(论点4). It can help us to improve our achievements and make sure we have sustainable resources for the future development.

3.2 What is important when contacting clients by telephone?

When contacting clients by telephone, we have to cover the whole range of business master in a limited time, so we have to be very brief and efficient in every minute available (论点1:在已给出的提示中:calling at the right time比较难拓展,需尽量扯到我们熟悉的或常识性的话题,即说话要简洁、有效). As a matter of fact, we talk all day, but how to talk is obviously a somewhat neglected art.

To be specific, you should make sure that you that you call your clients at the right time, because it is impropriate, impolite and very annoying to disturb your clients when they are in the middle of something. To put it in another way, the perfect timing is the key point.

Secondly, when contacting clients by telephone you should listen carefully, because one of the best ways to show your respects to your clients is to become a good listener(这是一个很好的理念,在商务交际中,做一名好的听众,而不是一直喋喋不休,体现了一个人的素养,同时也给予自己思考的时间。).

Thirdly, you need to have a positive attitude and to let your clients feel that you are positive and enthusiastic(论点3). Also, you can keep a harmonious circumstance between you and the clients. Of course, there are other details that you should pay attention to (论点4), such as do not hang up first. We often say that the details determine whether you will succeed or fail(细节决定成功还是失败). Note that the details can help a lot to solve the problems effectively.

3.2 What is important when managing change?

In this information age, the capacity to manage change is becoming increasingly important. Consequently, more and more managers begin to put this issue in the

spotlight(盖个小帽子).

In my perspective, when managing change, several factors should be taken into consideration. The first one is to set a clear objective(论点1), because it is the blueprint (蓝图)of a company’s future development. Without the guide of a clear objective, one will get lost in the business jungle(比喻还蛮贴切哦~~).

The second factor is communication skill(论点2). An effective communication can promote cooperation, and communication is usually considered as an inevitable(不可避免的) way to effective management.

The third one is technology and qualified personnel. They are the core competitiveness (论点3)of enterprises and they are the software and hardware that drive the enterprise to work in a full speed (全速进行). Without them, it is hard to keep pace with the time.

The last but not the least, creativity is also important (论点4). Even a single innovative idea may be capable of helping an enterprise to take the lion’s share in the market. Sample

With respect to setting up staff canteens, I suggest that we should be aware of the following four factors.

To start with, employees’ opinions are supposed to play a crucial role(论点1). Undoubtedly(无容置疑), we should conserve no effort to meet the needs of the employees. We can benefit a lot from this employee-oriented tactic. To be specific, we can compare notes with employees from different departments, or, alternatively, we can make them vote for a decision.

Secondly, the cost of the company deserves to be taken into consideration(你会发现,在组织观点时,均可涉及到资金方面,如果你实在想不到更好的专业知识,可加入资金问题). If there can be other more economical options, why bother to build an extra canteen? I mean , if the company can make a long term reservation (长期预定)with a restaurant probably, it saves time and money.

Thirdly, the financial situation tends to interfere in the decision making(论点3 还是资金问题哦,只是变了一种说法呢). If building a canteen is a better choice compared with ordering foods from restaurants in the long run, we still have to consider the expenses in building the canteen- an undergoing(经历,进行) construction is a big deal for the company anyway.

Lastly, the location of the canteen is also quite important. If you want to build a canteen, there should be space available for it .

Sample

When working as a teacher, the prime concern is sharing expertise(论点1). The need of the students should receive careful consideration. Through systematic training and teaching, the students should be able to resort to (依靠,求助于~~~) the professional skill of the teacher for reasonable solution of whatever problem they may come across in working experience.

Secondly, the teacher is expected to decide the responsibilities of his/her fellowman(论点2). In this case, it is better to tackle with(与do with, deal with, cope with同义) the

whole thing in an organic way rather than on a piecemeal(七零八碎的) basis. In other words, the person on the teaching position should be crystal clear(又一次碰到,意为完全明白,十分清楚) of the strength and weakness of every student and assign them to the right positions based on this judgment. Given this premise, the whole team can work in an efficient way.

Another crucial issue is how to monitor the students(论点3). Here we should adopt a flexible policy. It takes wisdom to let the students know that their behaviour will be noticed by the supervisor and simultaneously to invoke the creative spirit out of them(论点4). In this way, we can improve the behaviour pattern of the students and make full use of their potentialities.

If I am negotiating a contract with a customer, I will firstly take the customer’ needs into consideration(论点1). The reason is very simple: it is the basis of the undergoing negotiation; we are sitting around the negotiating table because we need something from each other. It is our common desire to conclude the business.

On the other hand, the success of the negotiation depends on the available budget. Without financial support, all the rounds(谈及谈判次数时,我们用几轮) of discussing and bargaining won’t make any sense. That is why it is an international practice(国际惯例) to consider about the budget first and reasonable design of the contract comes after that.

Besides the above mentioned points, long-term cooperation is also an essential element(谈判中既要考虑到short-term profits, 又要考虑到long-term relationship). Although the well-being of our own party is the main concern of us, we should insure that the prices we offered are very favourable (favorable price优惠价格), or we may even make some readjustment in our offer if the customer insists. The drive behind these behaviours is that sustainable profit and win-win outcome will make sure the contract can be held good for a long term. That is why we ought to make it our permanent principle(不变的原则) to honor the contract and maintain commercial integrity.

(Test format of Part 1)

(Tips on how to cope with Part 1)

(1) Greet upon entering the exam room.

Good morning, sir / miss / madam.

Good afternoon, sir / miss / madam.

Nice to meet you.

(2) Relax yourself, yet do avoid over relaxing yourself.{bec

(3) Familiarize yourself with the pronunciation and intonation of the interlocutor

and the other candidate.

(4) Be precise in understanding the questions.

Pardon, please?

I beg your pardon?

Sorry, could you please say that again?

I’m sorry, but I didn’t quite catch you. Would you please repeat what you’ve

just said?

(5) Avoid reciting your prepared answers.

(6) Speak to the examiner, and do not interrupt your partner when he /she is speaking.

(7) Use complete sentences rather than elliptical sentences.

Example 1

Interlocutor: Do you come from a large family or a small family?

Candidate: A large family. (or “A small family”)

Candidate: I come from a large family, with my grandparents and parents living

together. We are a happy family. Example 2

Interlocutor: Are you happy with your job?

Candidate: Yes. (or “Yes, I’m happy with my job”) (不建议采用的回答) Candidate: Yes, I’m very happy with my job, because I can learn a lot of new

things from my work.

(8) Avoid talking about unfamiliar topics.

例如,某考生不是很熟悉滑冰,在回答考官提问“What do you like to do in your free time?”时,却随口提起“I like skating very much.”考官接着追问:“Can you give us some detailed information on skating ?

(Authentic testing items & answer cues)

(1) Can you tell me something about yourself?

面对这样的问题,考生的回答应该包括如下信息:your name, your age, your occupation (or your school and major) and your personality.) Sample answer for your reference:

Well, my name is Zhang Peng. I’m twenty-one years old. I’m now studying in Dalian Maritime University towards a bachelor degree (of engineering / of

science / of arts), majoring in navigation / marine engineering /physics / English. I think I’m an out-going person; I love making friends.

(2) What kind of person would you say you are?

Sample answer for your reference:

I’m always trying to be optimistic, no matter what kind of difficulty I have met with. And I suppose I’m confident and positive, always working hard and sparing no effort to achieve my goals. Also I’m a person with a strong will and an independent mind. But that sometimes leads me to being impulsive, not calm enough, which is one of my major drawbacks.

(3) Can you tell me something about your friends?

Sample answer for your reference:

I have a large circle of friends. Most of them are my former school-mates /work-mates. They are all open, diligent and smart. We have a lot of common interests. We share both happiness and bitterness, and support each other in times of adversity /difficulties.

(4) What has been your most valuable experience?

Sample answers for your reference:

1. Up till now, I believe my most valuable experience is studying here, in Peking

University, which is regarded as the Harvard of China. I've got the chance to know many talented young people, and have learned a lot from them. Also, I have gained large amounts of knowledge, both in and after class. In addition, the first rate educational facilities enable me to gain access to both the outside world and the research fields.

2. As regards my most valuable experience, I suppose it should be traced back

to the year before last, when I managed to have a large order placed on our products through all sorts of hardships. There were so many government restrictions and so much red tape in international trading at that time that it was really an unforgettable moment when the contract was finally signed.

(5) How important is it to you to have opportunities for promotion in your career?

Sample answers for your reference:

1. Well, in fact, the opportunities for career promotion are important to

everyone. No one would prefer to stay in one position for the whole of his or her life. Certainly I’m no exception. But what is equally important to me is the kind of job satisfaction I can derive from my work. One might say that career promotion does contribute a lot to one’s job satisfaction, but as I see it, there are many other things that also contribute a lot to one’s

job satisfaction, for example, harmonious inter-personal relationship, recognition from co-workers or line managers, and so on.

2. Well, you know I’m a person who is quite reconciled with my status quo, so

the opportunities for career promotion are not so important to me. I prefer to do my proper work well and enjoy my life. As you know, higher position in a company means more responsibilities and much more pressure, and I would choose to lead an easy life rather than strain myself for something as vain as higher position in a company.

(6) Is it better for your career to stay in one company or to work for a number of

companies? (Why/Why not?)

Sample answer for your reference:

In fact, different people will adopt different attitude towards “job-hopping”. As I see it, the proverb “A rolling stone gathers no moss” really holds water. And, though job-hopping sometimes does bring about immediate financial benefits, what most contributes to one’s job satisfaction is not solely confined to material gains. In most cases, his or her loyalty to the company and the recognition he or she gets from colleagues and executives do count a lot.

(7) What creates a good or bad impression at an interview?

Sample answer for your reference:

In fact every interviewee wants to leave a good impression on the interviewer. Good impression will certainly result from one’s decent dressing, proper answers and being responsive. On the contrary, sloppy answers plus untidy dressing will certainly leave a bad impression on the interviewer. What’s more important is that, when the question is related to your specialty knowledge, you are supposed to talk in professional terminology rather than in layman’s terms.

(8) Do you think interviews are the best method of judging an applicant’s

suitability for a job?

Sample answer for your reference:

As I see it, interviews do reveal a lot about an applicant’s capabilities. Yet we can not say that they are the best method of judging an applicant’s suitability for a job. As the saying goes, “First impressions are always misleading”. So in order to find out whether an applicant is suitable for a job, we may need more time to find out about the applicant, so usually an internship is required for a newly recruited staff member.

(9) How important is English in business life in your country?

Sample answer for your reference:

In fact English is playing an important role in China’s business life; it is an essential skill for those who are engaged in foreign trade. What is noticeable

this that, since China adopted the open door policy in the latter half of the 20

century, foreign trade has been developing at a dazzling(耀眼的,眼花缭乱的) speed. In addition, now many large multinational corporations are operating on a global basis, and English is an important lingua franca(族际通用语)for the employees of those multinational companies.

(10) How important are imports or exports to your country?

Sample answer for your reference:

We can not say that China is a country that wholly relies on imports and exports for its national income, but foreign trade does play an important role in China’s national economy. For many years China has been maintaining a favorable balance of trade(贸易顺差), so that its foreign-exchange reserves(外汇储备)are massive(大量的,巨大的). This certainly guarantees the smooth operation of the national economy(国民经济).

Point Evidence

I like reading a lot.

I like reading. My favorite book is “Gone with the wind”. Because I love the main character.

I have a wide range of hobbies among which I love reading the most. My favorite book is “Gone with the wind” by Margaret Mitchell, because I greatly admire the main character--- Scarlet, who was brave to love and hate.

I also enjoy traveling very much.

I love traveling very much because I see traveling as a good opportunity to meet new people, new food and new culture, which by all means broadens my view.

I spend most of my long holidays traveling to different places, because it offers me great opportunities to meet new people, taste new foods, learn new cultures, thus adding my life experiences. Lijiang, Jiuzaigou, and Xinjiang are the most impressive places for me so far, so I highly recommend them.
