ACT W Block to certain Internet websites or not? Aug.2.2015 With the developing accessibility of information of the Internet, a lot of schools are implementing or considering implementing some blocking softwares to prohibit students from viewing materials considered “harmful to minors”, however, I think that these actions are neither reasonable nor realistic for the following three reasons.

To begin with, schools are not supposed to prevent students from getting to know the truth. Due to students’ rights to learn about the truth, schools have no excuse to deny these rights in spite of their so-called protective purposes. Schools are obliged to educate students, to teach them what is good and what is bad, to teach them what the society truly is, not to protect them from the

considered “harmful to minors” all the time. Because there will be someday that the students may get to know the society by themselves, they have to experience the pain sooner or later. Compared with feeling desperate in the future, perceiving the society as thoroughly as possible in school is much better and milder. So, schools had better respect students’ rights and provide them with what they should learn as detailed as possible.

What’s more, schools cannot virtually prohibit students from seeking the truth no matter how determined the schools are. The more schools want to hide, the more curious the students may become. Hence, they may get to know the truth by hook or by crook. If the schools do not

accommodate them with the information, the students may get to know them eventually by asking acquaintances, looking through old books, or even unblocked other countries’ websites. These actions will not only disturb other people’s lives, but also will lower the students’ studying efficiency. With the time of probing those information, the students may have learn a lot of other meaningful things. Sometimes schools choose to obscure some facts because they think those facts do no good to students and waste students a lot of time, however, if they provide those facts with students, they sill be able to learn by themselves that these facts are meaningless. On the contrary, secrets can often stimulate one’s curiosity, especially for well-educated students, it is useless to block the information since they can often find out the truth by themselves.

Lastly, even if schools block certain controversial or considered “harmful to minors” materials stiffly, they will lose students’ trust, since the students may keep wondering what their schools are trying to hide and doubt that their schools do not trust them. This is quite similar to the government’s capacity to win public trust. If a school always tries to hide something from its students, finally the students may get tired and consider their schools unreliable. On the contrary, the sense of being trusted can make the students more responsible, the students may be gratitude towards their schools openness and trust, and hence try to improve themselves by studying hard. Students are maturer than their schools consider, they can handle those sometimes cruel facts. They are the future of the world, if they even cannot face some unpleasant or even painful facts, how can they become tough and staunch people in the future? Mutual trust if really important, it can mold a better person while its absence can create strong feelings of uncertainty and destroy the students trust of the school at the same time.

In conclusion, neither the school should nor the school can actually block the truth, because it defies the humans’ ornate rights of knowing things. Also, it only provokes the students’ curiosity and they will learn the truth eventually with more wasted time. Besides, the effects of a mandatory block may be unspeakable since it may destroy the schools’ credibility.

Educators debate extending high school to five years because of increasing demands on students from

employers and colleges to participate in extracurricular activities and community service in addition to having high grades. Some educators support extending high school to five years because they think students need more time to achieve all that is expected of them. Other educators do not support extending high school to five years because they think students would lose interest in school and attendance would drop in the fifth year. In your opinion, should high school be extended to five years?

Since the arrival of the Third Industrial Revolution following the advent of computers, science and technology have been developing in an unprecedented speed and never show indication to pace down. It turns out to be there are always items emerging, from China and South Korea in East to North America in West, from clothing to smart devices . For instance, every company who sell smart phones release new versions of products whose hardware have better properties and who have more appealing functions, every year and even every month. Who don’t want a device that functions faster and better satisfy our needs?Nobody. From my perspective, it’s ridiculous to stubbornly pursue treasuring outdated items and it’s benefiting to purchase new devices in a proper frequency.

Just as Perspective One says, innovations should be valued. From ancient times when currents were invented to nowadays society when Steve Jobs bring people aesthetic enjoyment within smart phone, innovations often successfully delight people, inspire the market’s spirits, activate the economic increase, and eventually lead to the prosperity of a dynasty or a country. Innovations are good things and those who are propelling the innovations are the products’ fans, who long for new products with new functions. However, it’s hard to escape the fact that sometimes inappropriate innovations led by misleading desires are disastrous. There are uncountable drug-producing plots are functioning and the mongers are attempting to produce even more appetizing drugs when anxious drug can’t wait to have a sniff.Considering all of these, we have to claim that innovations and craziness are as important as they are, apt conduction is imperative.

Admittedly ,to cherish is an adorable human emotions. Human beings cherish their loved items, so do the modern people. But there is no need to cherish a drawback of a product. As for Perspective Two, i have to point out that to get new products doesn’t necessarily mean the rest are to be disposed or so-said disposal. Those functions who have lead to high efficiency and convenience would be preserved in the new device. The disposal items are not the whole old device but redundant components and to-be-improved hardware. The new items typically embrace newly developed original functions as well as existed humanized parts. True innovations require an appropriate balance between reservation and disposal.

We are in a accelerated-developing society. Innovations are throughout all the human history .Better-functioned gadgets can always capture the market. Perspective Three states that new things are emerging in a record-breaking speed so that it seems people are inappropriately pursuing new products. But i think to some extent we indeed need to be rational.A new products can be more efficient, but it’s too luxurious to purchase a new version every time when it’s released. Renewing the devices in an apt frequency is more acceptable.

As far as i am concerned, viewing the ever-releasing new products, governments should regulate them in detailed laws and rules. Meanwhile, individuals should change for more in-style and efficient product in proper frequency. As for the companies, they should ensure their products reserve well-remarked parts and be added to fantastic new functions. In this way, innovations can better serve for the prosperity of the society.

Sample Essay 6

Advances in technology have become so widely accepted in today’s culture that very few people are willing to pause to consider the consequences. People get so excited about what new technologies can offer that they forget to question whether there might be any negative effects. Without caution and deliberation, replacing the natural with the mechanical would undoubtedly be disasterous.

The economic implications of the potential mechanical takeover alone should be enough to dissuade anyone from moving too fast. In the event the robots are more widely used in the workplace, humans would surely be replaced. At first, businesses would benefit from the efficiency of robots, but eventually a depressed job market would lead to a population that

struggles just to feed themselves and their families, let alone purchase the products these robots make. In the long run, society will suffer if it does not take care to prevent the economic consequences of giving everything over to machines.

(At first,

businesses would benefit from the efficiency of robots),再反驳(but eventually„)。值得注意的是反驳部分的逻辑依然是由个人(a population that struggles)到社会(society will suffer),这一思路第一篇Sample Essay 6也采用过,但更加精彩。

Our careless use of automation has already taken a toll on our culture. People have been interacting with automation in nearly every aspect of their lives, whether it be shopping, banking, or the use of a telephone. The effect of this is obvious: basic respect for our fellow man is all but absent today because of increased interaction with automation. Why treat a machine with kindness? It suffers no emotional or psychological damage. In a culture saturated with automation, we get used to treating machines rudely, and we begin to treat each other rudely. This of course leads to all sorts of issues, like intolerence and incivility, and in the long run, results in the complete degradation of culture.

比如because of increased interaction with automation,语义上前文中People have been interacting with automation几乎完全重叠。 再比如本段末句中的incivility,其含义就是a rude or impolite attitude or behavior(韦氏词典释义)。

Even in the face of these obstacles, some people argue that the increasing intelligence of today’s machines is a good thing. After all, machine power can decrease the human work load. Computer processers double in power and ability every year. Computers are projected to reach human intelligence by as soon as 2025. The implications of this shift are unknown, but one thing is for certain. We are moving into this change too fast to anticipate and prevent damage to the human species. We are approaching this change too quickly for any sort of safety net to be built. Because of this, it is important that we as a species slow down our technological

development so that we might consider all the implications of a change this big. We must figure out how to handle negative societal and cultural consequences before we embrace total integration of automated, intelligent machines.

简评:本段反驳Perspective Three,写法和第二段一样也是先让步(After all)后反驳(but one thing is for certain)。但是让步部分并没有对Perspective Three中核心关键词“challenge our long-standing ideas what humans are or can be”和“pushes both humans and machines toward new, unimagined

We are moving into this change too fast to anticipate and prevent damage to the human species. We are approaching this change too quickly for any sort of safety net to be built. 还有后面的we might consider all the implications和We must figure out how to handle negative societal and cultural consequences也是一样一样的好吗?!

Decreasing the speed with which we incorporate mechanical influence is important because of the potential dangers that lurk in blind acceptance. Not only does the preference of the mechanical over the natural interfere with the job market and the economy, but its use also has the potential to seriously degrade our culture as a whole. In combination with the uncertainty surrounding the increasing intelligence of machines, it is most assuredly better for the human species that technological progress be slowed so that we can, if necessary, prevent additional damage.

 P1:People should not pursue materialism too much and ignore more important things like family, friends and community.{act

P2:Materialism gives people motivations to work hard.

 P3:Materialism gives people comfortable lives and higher living standards.

Materialism has become so widely accepted in today’s culture that very few people are willing to pause to consider the consequences. People get so excited about what materialism can offer that they forget to question whether there might be any negative effects. Without caution and deliberation, being obsessed with money and material things would undoubtedly be disastrous.

The psychological implications of pursuing material wealth alone should be enough to dissuade anyone from moving too fast. The desire for more stuff may spur people to work harder or even overtime. At first, salary earners would be happy to see their incomes and bonuses rise, but

eventually the desire for more may lead to greed, motivating people to use all possible means, fair or foul, to improve performance and turning the work place into an overly competitive environment. In the long run, society will suffer if it does not take care to prevent the unhealthy psychology of putting material wealth over everything else.

Our undue fascination with material objects has already taken a toll on our humanity. People yearn for more expensive, if not luxurious, things in nearly every aspect of their lives, whether it be dwelling, clothing, or transportation. The effect of this is obvious: possession comes to be valued over other things such as family, friends and community. Why spend an hour chatting with mom? I can’t get paid for this. Why treat a friend to dinner? It’ll cost me a fortune! In a culture saturated with materialism, the foundation of interpersonal relationships becomes merely a blatant calculation of what financial benefit will be achieved. In the long run, this new mindset and way of evaluating people results in the erosion of traditional values and the complete loss of humanity.

Even in the face of these obstacles, some people argue that the

preoccupation with materialism is a good thing. After all, materialism enables people to live comfortable lives and enjoy higher living standards. It is the blessings of materialism that remove the agony of poverty, the sorrows of illness and the discomforts of a limited life. The implications of this phenomenon are unknown, but one thing is for certain. We are indulging ourselves in materialism too deeply to anticipate and prevent 

damage to the human species. We are pursuing material well-being too avidly for any sort of safety net to be built. Because of this, it is important that we as a species slow down our materialistic pursuit so that we might consider all the disturbing implications. We must figure out how to handle negative societal and humane consequences before we hanker after more stuff.

Decreasing the speed with which we embrace materialism is important because of the potential dangers that lurk in blind acceptance.
